What Compounds are Measured with Water Testing in NH?

Posted on April 30, 2015

Water testing in NHDepending on the region, location, and direct source of water, different compounds may be measured with water testing in NH or MA. While each case calls for their own specific measurements, here are some of the common contaminates that are measured, and why they could pose a problem if present in your water supply.

Bacteria

Drinking water can become contaminated with illness-causing bacteria and pathogens, if the water supply comes into contact with waste water. If anyone in your home suffers from reoccurring GI distress such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, it is a good idea to have your water tested for potentially hazardous bacteria that may be present.

Heavy Metals

Heavy metals such s lead, copper, mercury, and arsenic can be present in water supplies, especially with private wells or older plumbing systems. This can lead to a metallic or bitter taste to the water, and if levels are high enough, it can lead to serious health problems to the kidneys, brain function, and nervous system.

Pesticides

For homes that are located on or near farmland, large gardens, or fruit orchards, pesticides could be a potential contaminate in the water supply. Depending on which compounds a pesticide is made up of, each one can cause different health complications and risks at higher levels. The professionals at The Water Store can complete water testing in NH or MA to help determine if your water supply is at risk.

pH

The pH of water is generally neutral, with a reading around 7 on the pH scale. If the pH of water falls below that number, it becomes more acidic and is what is referred to as soft water. Acidic water usually contains higher levels of heavy metals, can be corrosive, and can lead to health complications the higher its acidity.

On the other hand, if the pH of water is greater than 7, it becomes basic, or what is referred to as hard water. While there are generally no major health issues associated with hard water, it can give the water an off or bitter taste, and can lead to unwanted scale build up on dishes, washing machines, and showers.
